Meryl Davis and Charlie White, USA, Short Dance: The favorites to win the Gold for the Ice Dance competition--USA's Davis and White skated their Short Dance to My Fair Lady by Frederic Loewe. Meryl changed her costume to this pink blouson sleeved chiffon with sequin applique look. This was elegant if not a little "mature"--but in a good way. I actually liked the change. It was more intricate than what she last wore for this same Short Dance:









Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada, Free Dance: For their Free Dance to Petit Adagio Waltz and from Seasons by Alexander Glazunov and "Piano Concerto in F-sharp minor" by Alexander Scriabin, Tessa changed the costume she had last worn in her previous competitions. She wore a red look with Faberge Egg-inspired gold and red bustier with neck band and above-the-knee flared skirt. I liked the strong color choice but felt that the skirt was too long; it looked mumsy. This is what she last wore for the same Free Dance at...








And in case you are wondering, this was also a Costume Change from what they BOTH wore at the  ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final 2013/2014 at Marine Messe Fukuoka on December 7, 2013 in Fukuoka, Japan (above photo).




Tatsuki Machida of Japan, Free Program: Machida's costume choice for his Free Program to Music from The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky seen above at the Sochi Olympics Figure Skating Team competition was a return to what he had last worn at Skate America 2013 in Detroit, Michigan. This costume was one of my favorites from last year and I am glad he went back to this, as opposed to wearing what he last wore for this same Free Skate:








Gracie Gold of the USA, Free Skate: Gracie skated wonderfully at tonight's Sochi Olympics Figure Skating Team Finals to Music from Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky. This was not a costume change but there was a wardrobe malfunction. Her costume--designed by Brad Griffies Gale Johnson and Denise Gold--is beautiful and one of my favorites of the ladies. But the neckband snapped open during her skate:





Olympic Wardrobe Malfunction: Gracie Gold of the USA and her costume malfunction--her sequined neckband snapped off--this did not affect her skate at all, but as a fashion designer, I was holding my breath for sure!





Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada, Free Skate: Osmond wore one of my favorite costumes of the night--this mauve colored look with oversized jeweled crystal neckline and back. This costume was worn for her Free Skate to Music from the Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre soundtrack by Philippe Chany and music from Claude-Michel Schönberg & David Nixon's Cleopatra. I LOVED this costume; absolutely one of my faves of the Olympics. It reminded me of...








Carolina Kostner Italy, Short Program: This costume, worn by Italy's figure skating Fashion Diva, Carolina Kostner for her SP to "Ave Maria" by Franz Schubert. It's a beautiful costume--a light lilac chiffon look with nude illusion plunging neckline and crystals throughout. This--I've already said--is much better than her last costume choice for this same program:

In addition to the spectacular show, I always love watching the Olympics Opening Ceremony for the "Parade of Nations" and seeing what all the athletes wear. Leading up to these Sochi Olympics, weeks ago, I discussed HERE on my blog what we would see as the uniforms/outfits from some of the international athletes and now, we all got a chance to see them all. Most were quite boring--just a display of lots of uninteresting parkas and "Winter wear". However, there were a few Style Stand-Out's.

 





Before I talk about my favorite Parade of Nations outfits/uniforms, I want to highlight the super chic Parade of Nations "Snow Maidens" --Snegurochka in Russian-- who were holding the names of the countries. The all white outfits were quite chic. The look featured long sleeves, a high mock-turtleneck and knee-length skirt with side front slit--and yes, those great matching white boots. And those headdresses were quite fab as well. One particular Snow Maiden stood out and that was Russian supermodel--and girlfriend to Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, Irina Shayk (above photo). Naturally, she was the Snow Maiden for for Russia.



With that out of the way, Here's my list of favorite opening ceremonies Olympic Outfits:



Germany: As style-kooky as these outfits were from the German contingency, it was FABULOUS. It was such a breath of fresh--and colorful--style air just to see SOMETHING different out there at these Sochi opening Ceremonies Parade of Nations. The rainbow-colored parkas, those pajama-like printed pants, it was A LOT but like I said, I was thankful for it, especially when compared to the ba-ba-boring sartorial display from other countries: danke Germany!





Greece: As the first athletes to come out during the Parade of Nations, Greece made a strong statement with Blue parkas and matching track pants--the blue was expected since it is reminiscent of the beautiful church rooftops one sees in Mykonos and Santorini and of course the color is part of the Greek flag. But what caused a Social Media Style stir were those rainbow-colored mittens/knit gloves. Naturally--and not surprisingly--everyone wondered if they were making a statement of solidarity with the LBGT people of the world (and a slap in the face to the discriminatory Russian laws). But, the colors on those mittens were more to give a nod to the Olympic ring colors. I still hope that maybe, the uniforms' designers still wanted to give a wink-and-a-nod to us Gays.




Kazakhstan: In my opinion, the Kazakstan flag bearer, cross-country skier Yerdos Akhmadiyev, wins for Most Stylist Ensemble at Friday's Opening Ceremony. Yerdos was giving you Kazakh Fab in this traditional costume--fur hat, tunic and boots. Everything about this outfit was spectacular. And PS: I want those boots! Not sure where or when I would ever wear them but seriously, those are AMAZING!




Mexico: Coming in as close First runner-Up for Most Stylist flag Bearer is Mexican skier Hubertus von Hohenlohe. Along with the rest of the Mexico Olympic contingency, he wore a black and white Mariachi-inspired track suit. Let me repeat: A Mariachi Track Suit! It featured stripes down the center front, outseams of the pants, sleeve hems and pockets. In an interview, Hubertus said that he might not medal in the ski competition but if anything he wanted to get Best Dressed. I think he's achieved it. Muy Bien!




Georgia: I liked the bold red and white outfits worn by Georgia. They were strong and impactful, especially in a sea of not-so-exciting outfits worn by some of the other countries. I also loved the leanness of the pants and the scarf bearing the name of the country. Well done Georgia.







Sweden: Sweden's uniforms were designed by H & M, of course. I liked these outfits and this is why I have placed them here on my list of Best "Parade of Nations" Sochi Opening Ceremony outfits. The uniforms were sleek and modern. I think the "Style Stars" here were those bright mustard yellow printed scarves and ski caps.




Tonga: LOVE. LOVE. LOVE this palm tree printed hooded parka! Leave it to a very non-Winter weather nation like the island of Tonga to bust out with such a fun fashion statement showing the beauty, flora-and-fauna and tropical nature of their nation. I could totally see this jacket in a D & G, DSquared2 or Versace menswear collection. And I would probably buy it!




Poland: Poland's outfits were quite good. They were very "Winter"-like in its colors and reminded me of snow-capped mountains. I liked the ombre gray and white effect on the parkas, the zig-zag like printing was different and the pops of "Poland red" were great. Those ski caps are cool too.





Venezuela: Venezuela's flag-bearer, alpine skier Antonio Pardo, takes the prize for being THE MOST ENTHUSIASTIC flag bearer at Friday's Opening Ceremony. Antonio came out and waved that flag and danced and jumped up and down as if he had already won FIVE Gold Medals! There was NO ONE prouder or happier to be on that stage. Look at the face of the guy behind him, he's like "Oh Dear! Antonio is about to QUEEN OUT!!"...Oh and yes, in terms of the outfits, I also loved the Venezuelan-flag colored track suits. But more importantly, Antonio wins on enthusiasm alone: that was stylish to me.




Russia: In my post where I discussed what the athletes would be wearing, I kind of dissed these ensembles from the Russian Federation. However, now after seeing what 80% of the international athletes wore for their respective countries, I kinda liked these! They stood out, the 70's-like Hippie Chick fur trimmed coats were quite fashion fab (in a retro way) and the red, white and indigo blue colors were well mixed and used in different variations throughout the parade of outfits. So, yes, I take it back: I LIKEY these!




USA: I also have to reassess my comments on these "uniforms"/outfits worn by the USA contingency of athletes at Friday's Opening Ceremony. I know that these sweaters are A LOT and very "AMERICANA" in your face and many people criticized them (including myself) but again, after a sea of boring parkas, I was really happy to see something different and this was it! The too-muchey patchwork-like sweaters were the perfect 'Statement making"piece of clothing to wear with the stark white skinny pants and white turtlenecks. In retrospect, I do think the Ralph Lauren design team styled this and designed these just right!



Finally, after stating my Top 11 Favorite Outfits from the Sochi Opening Ceremony, I wanted to mention one particular country that was a Style Let-down--and that dubious honor goes to...


France: Seriously France. What. Is. This. Above. Putty Gray and Khaki. No. And No. For supposedly being the Fashion Capital of the World, this was a major let-down for France. Next time, the French Olympic committee should pay the big bucks and hire Jean Paul Gaultier, Stephane Rolland or Alexandre Vauthier to design these. S'il vous plaît.

Hello again "Under The Gunn" fans and faithful readers of my "Inside Dish" here on my blog---This week was the 4th episode of Lifetime Network's "Under the Gunn" entitled "Unconventional Vampire". The challenge was to create a look inspired by the new film "Vampire Academy" and use a mix of both "regular" fabric as well as unconventional.





I loved the whole spooky imagery created by the lights and scenic production team of "Under The Gunn". The entire "set" was AMAZING! It was all done at Grand Hope Park right outside of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM campus, yet these professionals "turned it out"; making everything look like a scary movie, of sorts. There was SO much dry ice "fog" air that, several times, we could barely see Tim introducing the challenge--or "Vampire Academy" actress Sarah Highland--and therefore filming had to be stopped, and re-shot.



So let's get to my "Inside Dish" and yes, Miss Isabelle...




The Tim Nudge: When Tim Gunn and I went into the workroom to visit my designers--and specifically Isabelle, she was ALL OVER THE PLACE. When she was trying to explain to both of us what she was doing, it was evident that she needed to focus. When Tim Gunn nudged me as she was talking, it was as if he was saying to me "That Isabelle is CRAY CRAY...and Good Luck!".




Inside Beauty Dish: Something you guys didn't see on the episode was the fact that during the hair-and-makeup time, and after Benefit Cosmetics and Blow Pro finished their job of making her model look fab, Isabelle was NOT HAPPY (she looked perfectly fine, BTW!). She decided to take her model, sit her in a Benefit "Pretty Room" chair and re-do her model's hair.







She was OBSESSED with this and shaking at the thought of her model going out during the runway with what the actual professionals had done. I tried to tell her that the Blow Pro stylists had done a great job on her model's hair but she was totally against it so she went "Hair Rogue". In the end, her model's hair was OK and not an issue but I, personally, thought it was rather disrespectful to do this.












Natalia Fedner: Natalia's wine-red silk dress was a good one. Behind the scenes, she struggled a bit with this but in the end, she pulled it out.

Inside Dish: The black netting midriff was the issue, but like I said., it all worked out.




Stephanie Ohnmacht: I LOVED Stephanie's ivory fitted "Vampira Chic" dress. I have to say that it was one of my faves and not just because she was one of my designers. Her design was sleek and reminded me of a Stephane Rolland or Rolland Mouret dress. This look, however, was not problem-free.




Inside Dish: Stephanie used this black netting "unconventional" material which she incorporated in the neckline. The netting was very harsh and itchy and eventually made her model cry as it rubbed up against her skin. Her whole neck was red from the irritation. I reached out to the production people to get some medical tape that possibly could be put against her skin to lessen her pain. To make a long story short, we got it done. But her model gets TEN RUNWAY POINTS for not CRYING through the whole runway experience.




Oscar Lopez: This was my favorite look of the night and I was surprised it did not win. Oscar hit the whole "Vampire Academy Chic" look on the nose!

Inside Dish: Oscar used red "unconventional" material and black jersey. He completely doubled this jumpsuit in the jersey fabrication. Completely. During the fitting with his model, however, we hit a problem: it was too short in the torso. He miscalculated the model's torso length. I came in and suggested to Oscar that he add a 2-2 1/2" waistband in the black jersey and sew it to the waist to "extend" the torso. Not only did Oscar do that but he also (wisely) added it to the red front panel. No one would ever notice the "mistake". I was in awe of his quick sewing "fixing" ability.








Isabelle Donola: Oh Miss Isabelle. Let me just say that when Tim and I went into the workroom, I quickly got the sense that she A) did not want to be mentored (at least by me); and B) she wasn't going to listen to my suggestions. I liked her idea but asked her to edit and think about having her look be less kooky and more fashion-friendly. I also asked Isabelle to do an "Option 2" in terms of a wrap-around red accent. Only because I thought her first idea would be considered too "avant garde" and would not be flattering for her wearer.




Oh Dear Isabelle: The following day, I found out that she had not done as I suggested and half-made the inner-dress. I almost choked when judge Zanna Roberts Rassi said that the aforementioned inner dress was so well-done (if Zanna only knew that it was half sewn!). But in "Project Runway"-style, Isabelle made it work. But trust me kids, this experience with Isabelle made me think twice about choosing her as one of my group's designers. It was beginning to be obvious that she did not like me, respect me or wanted  my advice.
